Surrounded by images since early childhood under a great influence from his family, Toni Milian always had a camera around and film rolls to shoot. He started focusing on trips and curiosities, but after the birth of musical organizations such as High-Voltage and Neblina Sound in Barcelona, he started to make his first photo reports in “free parties”, achieving a personal “making of” about their events.
In 2001 he went to spend a year in Brussels, where he recorded into images his stay and experiences. With a 35mm compact Olympus he would picture almost daily friends and acquaitances, as well as the typical situations experienced in a foreign country.
A lover of electronic music, he found in Brussels a new way to feel this music. Once a month there was a great event featuring techno music in some neighboring city. Light effects, sophisticated decorations, laser, high quality sound, world top DJ’s…. pushing the audience into sharing the same idea, melting into the crowd to be carried away. That is, deeply feeling the music!!
These events meant such a strong impact on him that, after finishing his photography studies, they were the subject matter of his academic final project. He grabbed his old analogic SLR and tried his first photo report at “Mayday” (Dortmund 2003). Happy with the result, that very year he took the challenge of the queen of parties, the “Love Parade” in Berlin. Impossible hairdo’s, glittering lights and futuristic clothes. You couldn’t just walk, you had to run! It was the perfect set for shooting. There he realized that he was able to capture the sensations he sought and he was so motivated that he initiated, the www.partyphoto.org project.
He subsequently got in touch with Dj1 magazine, with which he collaborated with the publication of reports about the best festivals devoted to electronic music in Europe, such as Time-Warp (Mannheim), Sonar (Barcelona), Awakenings (Amsterdam), Nature One (Hanau), Monegros Desert Festival (Huesca), Creamfields (Almería), as well as reports about renowned clubs like The End (London), Fuse (Brussels), Florida135 (Huesca), Amnesia (Ibiza), Privillege (Ibiza), La Terraza (Barcelona), Blau (Girona), Le Rachdinge (Figueres)…
